Sneering in disdain he replied. “How is a mere human going to stop us from tearing you apart?”

As she extended her nails, I can’t help but think of the claws of a tiger. Sticking out one finger, she drags it down the force-field, causing a grating sound to echo around the room. A darkness crosses her features, as her face contorted with rage, her icy gaze fixated on the vampire standing in front of us. “You foolish boy. Do I look like a mere human to you?”

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

MEGAN

Whatever he saw caused his eyes to widen in sheer terror. Stumbling backwards, he screams. “What the fuck are you?”

“Your worst nightmare.”

At the guttural sound that came from her mouth, the fine hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. My breath stilled and I can’t help the shudder that travels through my entire body.

Ignoring the others behind us, I put up a hand to silence them and pray she wasn’t losing control of her other half. In a hoarse whisper, I gently call out. “Astrid.”

Hearing my voice, her dark head swings around. Her once green eyes have turned as black as soot. She stares at me, a fixed expression on her face as her eyes narrow into slits. The muscles covering her face ripped under her flesh, causing my stomach to turn over as I dried heaved. “Astrid, we need you to keep yourself under control. Don’t let your witch take over.”

“They are threatening you and the others.”

My heart kicked up a beat as it pounded in my chest, blood pulsed through my veins as it surged through me. The air between us was explosive with tension. Stepping forward so I was mere inches away, I placed my hand on her arm, watching as she lowered her head to stare at my hand before she raised it again to stare at me. Her eyes darted; her forehead puckered as she surveyed the woman standing behind us. They were all staring at her with the same dreadful expressions written across their faces. We didn’t know if she would turn on us, draining the life out of our bodies.

I didn’t need to ask what the others were thinking or feeling. We were all thinking the same thing. Was her other half taking over or did Astrid have her under control? Never taking my eyes from her own, I waited and watched.

If I had shifted my eyes to look at the vampires or over to the rest of my family, I would have missed the telltale sign. It told me all I needed to know.

Rolling her eyes, her lips twitched as her link connected to ours.

‘I’m fine. Sit back and watch the show, otherwise we could be in shit street.’

We all felt the relief as it traveled down our link, and I could help thinking thank fuck she hadn’t turned. Now we knew she was toying with them. We took a silent sigh of relief.

Wiping all expression from her face, she turned to face the five male vampires before us.
